Old Meets New At Gordon Head

Victoria BC

In this newly built 4,600 square foot home, we created an interior design that truly expresses the essence of our clients. The homeowners came to the project with very different tastes—he loves a clean, modern look, while she is inspired by the richness and dramatic colour of old-world European style. We spent time getting to know our clients’ personalities so that we could really understand what was most important to each of them.

We also love to collaborate with builders, tradespeople and artisans. In this home, that approach sparked innovative ways to blend traditional and contemporary design. Like in the master bedroom, where our design centres around a hand-painted Holy Family icon above the bed, framed with a navy blue backdrop and pinstripe border. Deep navy blue draperies with a contemporary motif add a modern touch to the room’s overall traditional feel. We also carefully balanced masculine and feminine touches in the ensuite bath, pairing dark cabinetry and contemporary fixtures with a stained glass window, porcelain tile, and a crystal chandelier.

Since they frequently entertain their extended family, we also made sure key spaces like the kitchen could accommodate large gatherings. Again, we paired old and new, setting traditional stained glass windows beside a decidedly modern tile mosaic backsplash above the range, all framed by herringbone tile with contemporary white millwork. The living room maintains a more modern feel, with clean-lines and neutral colours enlivened by splashes of yellow and red. The overall design creates a perfect blend of contemporary and old-world elements that achieves the almost impossible: pleasing the disparate tastes of both husband and wife.
